Frequently asked questions about plasterboard
Updated 5 Aug 2026
Plasterboard can create fast, clean partitions, ceilings and wall linings, but the system must be designed for its use.
Board type, framing, reinforcement, insulation and service routes should be decided before the construction is closed.
The answers below explain the choices that matter most in a flat renovation.
Four questions before installation

1. Which board type is suitable?
Standard board is used in dry interiors. Moisture-resistant board is used in suitable bathroom and utility-room systems, but it is not waterproof on its own. Fire, acoustic or impact requirements may need a specific system.
2. How many layers are needed?
A single 12.5 mm layer can be sufficient for less demanding partitions. Double boarding improves stiffness, fire performance and acoustic performance where the designed system requires it.
3. Is acoustic insulation necessary?
Mineral wool inside a partition significantly reduces sound transfer between bedrooms, children’s rooms and a flat and its hallway.
4. Can kitchen cabinets hang on plasterboard?
Yes, if the frame is designed for the load. Use planned reinforcement, OSB backing or suitable heavy-duty anchors before the wall is closed.
Frequently asked questions
Is green plasterboard waterproof?
It is more resistant to humidity, but it is not intended for permanent direct contact with water. Bathrooms still need suitable waterproofing and a correctly designed finish, especially around showers.
What board is used for a normal wall?
A 12.5 mm board is common, but the correct build-up depends on partition height, stiffness, acoustic requirements, fire performance and the loads to be fixed.
Does every partition need mineral wool?
No, but it is strongly useful between bedrooms, children’s rooms or a flat and a hallway where acoustic comfort matters.
