Plaster or skim coat: what is the difference?

Updated 5 Aug 2026

Plaster and skim coat both prepare walls, but they solve different problems. Confusing them can lead to unnecessary work or an uneven finish.

Plaster corrects larger irregularities, while a skim coat creates a smooth surface ready for paint.

The right combination depends on the existing wall, the desired finish and the lighting that will reveal imperfections.

Both methods belong to wall preparation before painting, but each has a different job. Here is the practical difference side by side.

Base plaster

Main purpose
Levels larger irregularities
Typical layer
About 5–15 mm
Surface
Fine texture
Best for
Masonry and new rough render

Skim coat

Main purpose
Smooths a level substrate
Typical layer
About 1–3 mm
Surface
Smooth and paint-ready
Best for
Existing plaster and plasterboard

Which is better?

It depends on the condition of the walls. Use plaster to correct rough masonry or a new render; use a skim coat on a level surface where you want a smooth finish before painting.

What a well-prepared wall gives you

  • A more even paint finish
  • Fewer visible joints and repairs
  • Better appearance in side lighting
  • Lower risk of having to repaint after furniture is installed

Frequently asked questions

Does plasterboard need traditional plaster?

Usually no. Correctly installed plasterboard normally needs joint treatment, primer and a suitable skim coat or finishing system rather than a thick base plaster.

When is a skim coat alone enough?

When the substrate is stable, reasonably flat and free of large cracks or hollows. Larger defects should be repaired and levelled first.

How long does plaster need to dry before painting?

The time depends on layer thickness, substrate, temperature and ventilation. Do not paint by the calendar alone; the surface must be dry, stable, primed and ready according to the product instructions.
