How to prepare a flat before renovation

Updated 5 Aug 2026

Good preparation protects furniture, documents the starting condition and gives tradespeople clear access to the work area.

Before demolition begins, agree access, utilities, storage and the sequence of work with the contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to remove all furniture?

Anything in the work area should be removed or securely protected. For demolition, dust and moving materials, a completely clear room is usually the safest and fastest option.

Should I disconnect utilities myself?

Only where it is safe and appropriate. Gas, electrical and water disconnection should be handled by the responsible professional when the work requires it.

When should the layout be finalised?

Before channels, plumbing and electrical first fix. Socket, light, door and sanitary positions depend on the furniture and final layout.
