Doorway widths in a flat

Updated 5 Aug 2026

Doorway width is a basic part of comfortable and functional housing. During a renovation, choose dimensions that work for daily movement as well as for bringing in furniture and appliances.

The guide covers entrance doors, rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, WCs, storage and technical spaces, including the difference between door-leaf width and actual clear passage.

Planning the correct width early prevents expensive changes once frames, floors and finishes are installed.

How is a clear doorway measured?

Measure the clear opening between the inner faces of the frame. The door leaf, frame profile and installation tolerances all affect the final passage, so the leaf width is not the same as the usable opening.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should a bathroom door be?

A common minimum is 70 cm of clear passage, with 70–80 cm more comfortable. For accessible use, plan at least 90 cm and verify the complete project.

What is the difference between leaf width and clear passage?

The clear passage is narrower than the door leaf because of the frame and installation. An 80 cm leaf usually gives approximately 76–78 cm of clear opening.

How much space should be left in front of a wardrobe?

Leave at least 60 cm in front of doors. Add more where several people pass through or larger items need to be handled.
